Log of Computer Glitches

Page history last edited by Victor Lorand 11 years, 4 months ago

1. 11/15/'12 A lady had overdrive installed on her Kindle Fire, wanted to get Sarasota Library Ebooks- her Overdrive- is letting her sign in- but is only letting her select Open Epub format, won’t let her select Kindle or Library epub.

Tried to redownload overdrive software- (tried clicking on the amazon app store icon) 20 minutes later the Agree menu showed up and then spun around for 30 minutes- then I told her to try it at home.

Possible solution:(by Library teen at Gulfgate)

The absence of Kindle books on the OverDrive website was a glitch I noticed a while ago in the mobile version of the website. I don't think I ever figured it out. If it happens again, they might want to look for an option somewhere to view the website in the "desktop version," although I don't think I ever found it. When this happened to me, I just explained that I was not sure why the website was redesigned this way for mobile devices and invited the patron to use a computer to find a book to check out. Once the books are on the OverDrive account it should be smooth sailing.

VL: 12/5/'12 Yes, once it's in the account using a nonwireless PC- it appears in the account and the download button appears- but I tried to download to a memory stick on the Library PCs- and it only downloaded a 2kb shadow file. On a home PC it shlould allow downloading to PC and dragging and dropping to the Kindle Fire- not sure what folders will appear in the Kindle Fire- how obvious that will be.

2. 11/15/'12 A little girl brought her Kindle Fire. It shows her having an item checked out today- due in two weeks, Amazon.com won’t let her redownload it- claims the item is expired- I told her to try downloading to her home pc and showed her how to drag and drop and try it… or to have to wait the whole 2 weeks… or to download Kindle for PC to her home PC and read it on the home PC.

Possible solution by Gulfgate teen volunteer:

I don't quite understand the issue with the "expired" book, and obviously you weren't the one troubleshooting, so you wouldn't know either. However, I think that what may have happened is that the book was sent into archives on her Amazon account, so she has a copy already and thus cannot redownload it. It doesn't sound like they checked the archives, so you may want to remind Mr. Lorand or whomever provides assistance that they should do this.

3. 11/15/'12 A Lady with an Ipad just came in, is trying to get a Writing App for her Ipad besides “Notes”.  we found “Documents Free” in the App store- Safari was working on her Ipad but when trying to install Documents Free- it says it can’t connect to the App store.

Possible solution:

The last problem is a simple one. The iPad was having trouble connecting to the internet - the App Store will become unavailable if there is limited or no internet connection. This happens sometimes with the library network because of the page where you are supposed to click through for access. I don't know specific details, but I am pretty sure this was the problem. I have no remedy other than they should try it at home. They may also be able to purchase the app through the iTunes store on one of our computers so that the next time the iPad is properly connected to internet, it updates itself, but this is speculation, and I would have to try it

4. 11/19/'12 Bluecoat message on a wireless laptop- Windows 7, ..teen had checked that the time was set correctly (provious issue with the previous Egov laptop) - He ran a cleaning program which found and eliminated some Tracking cookies and now his laptop is not getting Bluecoated.

5. Lady with an ipad- wasn't getting proper notification by email of waiting list items- I noticed the email was incorrect-  had to look up in Overdrive help how to change her email- Click on My account- then the next non-obvious step is Click on Holds- then enter the email.
